One mission for over 30 years.
Cook Research Incorporated, located in the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette, Indiana, was incorporated in May 1983 under the name of MED Institute. What started as a University-industry partnership, which focused primarily on product development, rapidly expanded to include supporting services of clinical research, non-clinical and pre-clinical testing, medical and scientific writing, and regulatory strategy.
In November 1982, Bill Cook and Neal Fearnot first discussed the possibility of starting a company to serve as a research and development arm of the Cook Medical companies. The proposed task of the company was to assist with the university-industrial cooperative product development. Incorporation papers were signed to form MED Institute, Incorporated (MED) on May 26, 1983, with Neal Fearnot as president.
MED originally focused on supporting research and development engineering. However, the need to provide support in the areas of clinical studies, patents, regulatory affairs, and nonclinical testing soon became evident. The Cook Zenith AAA Endovascular Graft is one device where MED supported test method development, development engineering, intellectual property development, nonclinical testing, clinical trial administration, monitoring, data analysis, PMA submission, and presentation to an FDA advisory panel. The device was approved by the FDA in 2003.
To further the mission of Cook Medical providing medical products to patients, MED Institute was divided into two separate companies in 2015. Cook Research Incorporated was formed and continues with the original mission of MED to provide expertise to Cook Medical where needed in the support of transforming scientific ideas into medical products.
